calling the blessed apukuna (mountain spirits) has got to stir up something i would think…
and call and call is what i did… over and over in such a way as to attempt to record a song that honours the mighty mountain spirits… an Inkan chant that hails from somewhere in deepest, darkest Peru (and i’m still trying to find out where exactly)…
last week’s recording wasn’t easy and probably was one of the hardest sessions in a studio that i’ve experienced, i think… after about an hour of struggle, it was clear the mountains wanted their way with their song… cuz whatever i had planned and preconceived certainly wasn’t working that’s for sure… and to top it all off… earlier that day in the wee hours, i received a very strong message that my mesa also wanted to be included in the recording too… which later proved to be an interesting moment when i mentioned that request to the engineer… and i feel lucky that he happens to be a wonderful, caring guy…
and best of all... i think i finally have my own "rock group!"... hip! hip!
anyway… i got as much done as i could get done in about 2 short hours… not a lot of time but what was available and did the best i could do… i took the unfinished 50 minute extended chant off to the north direction medicine wheel in Sorrento last weekend… to offer it to be a part of the ceremony of rites that would happen on the Sunday morning… feeling kind of amazed that i had actually created anything at all with how it all went...
all weekend during the wheel i felt strange… even tho’ i had had a couple of good sleeps, i felt extremely tired and drawn out most of the time… and it seemed that i was having difficulty with my vision… like i was in a fog of some sort… at one point i even tranced out while playing a rattle for an perceptual states' exercise... having completely lost it and went somewhere i have no idea where... the teacher noted that she was surprized as to how out of it i was, rattling all over the place when i'm usually more "on it"...
on Saturday night my friend and i were walking down the dark trail to the beach to participate in sacred fire… slowly we made our way down and along the field towards the beach… i was following close right behind my friend who was lighting our way with her flashlight… we had just crossed the road and were about to enter through the gate when all of a sudden i blindly hit a huge (1 x 2 x 3.5 foot) rock... tumbling right over it and landed real hard on my hands in front of me… my toque and drum bag had flown off in opposite directions and i was lying face down on my stomach in the cold, wet grass with my feet still up, perched along side of the stone… i thanked great spirit for wet, cold grass…
my friend couldn't believe what had happened and came rushing back to help me... i seemed to be okay except for feeling a bit shocked, shook up and a tad sore on my knees, hands and arms… and astounded that i had fallen so abruptly…
why me?… it was strange that my friend had totally missed the rock, bypassing it and hadn't even seen the rock right beside her…when i had been so close right behind her the whole way… i can’t help but wonder that maybe the rock... hit me???
weird…
what was really interesting is that the next morning when i expected to feel sore and out of whack… i actually felt better than i had all weekend… my head was clearer… my sight was clearer and i wasn’t sore at all…
weird…
and so… all i can say is… calling the blessed apukuna has certainly stirred me up and knocked me flat… and…
well… more on this later, i think…
